TIGARD, Oregon, USA – July 8, 2021Agilyx Corporation (AGLX), a wholly owned subsidiary of Agilyx AS (Euronext Growth (Oslo): “AGLX”) and a pioneer in the chemical recycling of post-use plastics, announced today Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) results for its chemical recycling technology. Agilyx participated in the Styrenics Circular Solutions LCA, contributing data for its depolymerization technology.

During the Styrenics Circular Solutions virtual event, ‘Move to Zero. Zero Waste. Zero CO2. Powered by Styrenics,’ LCA findings were unveiled with results indicating that Agilyx’ depolymerization technology saves approximately 75% of CO2-emissions in comparison to the production of polystyrene from virgin raw materials and incineration.

The SCS LCA focused on closed loop recycling routes back to food contact quality, analyzing food-quality polystyrene recycling options. Results from the study indicated that depolymerization is the most efficient process to recycle polystyrene into truly circular food quality products. Furthermore, depolymerization is the shortest recycling process in comparison to mechanical recycling and dissolution to achieve virgin food grade quality, enabling a fully circular process.

“At Agilyx, we want to accelerate the capture of post use plastics to put them to their best use,” said Tim Stedman, chief executive officer. “Our chemical recycling technology delivers a waste-to-value option for post-use plastics to get them back into the circular economy. These exciting results show the beneficial role that depolymerization can play in the recycling chain, where chemical recycling and other technologies can enable the circularity of plastics.”

This LCA study of polystyrene was performed by the leading research institute Neue Materialien Bayreuth (NMB), based in Germany. The methodology used by NMB followed the relevant international standards ISO 14040 / ISO 14044 and will be peer-reviewed.

  • AmSty and Agilyx to jointly own and operate proposed 50-100 ton per day polystyrene recycling facility
  • Facility to recycle waste polystyrene back into circular products
  • Targeted location is AmSty’s Styrene production facility at St. James, Louisiana

The Woodlands, TX, and Oslo, Norway – April 8, 2021 – AmSty, the largest polystyrene producer in the Americas, and Agilyx Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Agilyx AS (Euronext Growth (Oslo)): (“AGLX”), a pioneer in the advanced recycling of post-use plastics, announced today an agreement to explore the development of a jointly owned advanced recycling facility. The initial scope of this project will be a 50 to 100 ton per day advanced recycling facility located at AmSty’s Styrene production facility in St. James, Louisiana. The facility will be a next generation expansion of Agilyx advanced recycling technology already in use at the parties’ Regenyx joint venture operating in Tigard, Oregon (www.regenyxllc.com), where post-use polystyrene products are converted back into virgin-equivalent styrene monomer.  A feasibility study for the project is under way, with a timeline for construction and commissioning to be announced as progress continues.

“Polystyrene is an ideal material for the future of recycling,” said Dr. Randy Pogue, president, and chief executive officer of AmSty.  “Not only can polystyrene products offer sustainability advantages where less material is required (e.g., a polystyrene foam cup is 95% air), but polystyrene is particularly advantageous for advanced recycling because it can be “unzipped” back to its original liquid form, styrene monomer, using 40% less energy than other polymers.  As the global plastics industry moves toward circular recycling to build value and grow access, polystyrene becomes very attractive as a first mover with its inherent conversion advantages.  AmSty is committed to keeping polystyrene products out of landfills through circular recycling.  We are excited to expand our relationship with Agilyx in this new project to accelerate progress.”

“Development of this technology has picked up over the past decade, and it is time to reach a larger scale,” said Tim Stedman, chief executive officer of Agilyx.  “We have been operating Regenyx with AmSty since 2019 and are pleased to expand our relationship toward a much larger facility at St. James. Joining AmSty as a co-investor underlines our commitment to accelerating the implementation of Agilyx advanced recycling technology and our licensing model. We believe that our technology will significantly increase the availability of recycled content for producers.”

Feedstock for this collaboration would be accessed via Cyclyx, Agilyx’s feedstock management company. AmSty is a founding member of the Cyclyx consortium. The Cyclyx platform encompasses an integrated set of innovations including chemical characterization of plastics, predictive modelling of feed sources to product pathways, custom feedstock recipes, and customized supply chains to deliver waste plastic feedstocks appropriate for recycling pathways.

Certification is a third-party review that provides traceability of recycling process

PORTSMOUTH, New Hampshire, USA, April 6, 2021 – Cyclyx International, LLC, a consortium-based feedstock management company with a mission to increase the recyclability of plastic from 10% to 90%, announced today it obtained certification through the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification Plus (ISCC PLUS) process for its post-use plastic management systems.

The ISCC PLUS certification provides Cyclyx customers assurance that the plastic feedstock acquired for their processes satisfies conditions of being post-use and are traceable and auditable. The distinction certifies Cyclyx as a circular pathway point of origin and allows Cyclyx customers to use mass balance accounting to attribute post-use plastics to the production of their certified circular plastics and other products.

Cyclyx is currently sourcing post-use plastic for advanced recycling facilities, including the Agilyx Corporation and AmSty joint-venture Regenyx’s facility in Tigard, Oregon and the ExxonMobil facility located in Baytown, Texas. The post-use plastic sourced for these facilities originates from over 500 sources and is already certified as ISCC PLUS compliant. In addition to the projects in the United States, Cyclyx has engaged with other international companies, and this certification allows for Cyclyx to source and qualify feedstocks anywhere in the world.

“We are excited and proud to have received the ISCC PLUS certification,” Joe Vaillancourt, chief executive officer of Cyclyx, stated. “We understand the great need to validate the claims of recycled content made by our customers for the products they produce. This certification is the result of significant hard work by the Cyclyx team and provides validation of our unique process for chemically characterizing end-of-life plastics and ability to target different recycling options for post-use plastics as we strive for an overall goal of increasing global plastic recycling from 10% to 90%.”
